Earth Day Charles River Cleanup

Join Charles River Watershed Association volunteers 10am-12pm on April 25 for their annual Earth Day effort to collect trash from the Charles River and surrounding area! The cleanup brings together over 3,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter, remove invasive species, and assist with park maintenance along all 80 miles of the Charles River. Book Event on Climate Change

YPE Boston is excited to partner with Porter Square Books to host a Be the Change event focused on climate change in Boston. This event will take place at PSB's NEW location at 1815 Mass Ave, Cambridge.

Courtney Humphries, PhD is a writer, journalist, teacher, researcher, and interdisciplinary scholar interested in the how we navigate science, nature, and society in a changing climate and an urbanizing world. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Boston College and has a PhD in environmental sciences from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Prior to that, she worked as a freelance writer for the Boston Globe, Technology Review, Nautilus, Architect, and other publications, and she is a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. She has given public talks and participated in panel discussions about climate change in Boston, and is completing a book about the city’s efforts to mitigate and prepare for climate change, Climate Change and the Future of Boston, to be published by Anthem Press.

Erin Douglas is a climate reporter for The Boston Globe, where she covers climate adaptation, impacts, resilience, and disaster recovery. Her work in Boston is typically focused on sea level rise and extreme precipitation in the northeast. Erin previously covered environment and energy issues in Texas for five years, where she was an environment and climate reporter for The Texas Tribune, and prior, a reporter for the Houston Chronicle. Her coverage of Texas’ near-statewide power blackouts was recognized with an Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) award in 2021, and her work exploring the mental health impacts of climate disasters was recognized as part of the Tribune’s Edward R. Murrow award for overall excellence in 2022. Erin studied journalism and economics at Colorado State University. She is a proud — and new — resident of Dorchester, but travels frequently to report from all corners of New England.

As a Senior Climate Resilience Project Manager, Catherine McCandless works in the Office of Climate Resilience (formally Climate Ready Boston) with a focus on coastal resilience. In this role, she oversees the development of neighborhood coastal resilience planning, the implementation of coastal resilience projects, wetlands protection and restoration projects, and the cross-departmental integration of climate resilience into the City's planning, capital projects, and permit review. Before joining the City of Boston, Catherine was an Environmental Planner at VHB, where she worked on sustainability and resiliency planning projects and managed the environmental review processes for private and public development projects in Greater Boston. She began her career at the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, where she worked on the development of affordable housing, and subsequently served as the Assistant to the Director of Planning at the Boston Planning and Development Agency. Originally from Durham, N.C., Catherine received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Biology from Wellesley College and her Master in Urban Planning from the Harvard Graduate School of Design

Charles River Cruise with YPE Boston

YPE Boston is hosting our first-ever Charles River cruise! Come aboard the Charles River Boat Company's Henry Longfellow for a private charter featuring an appetizer spread, games, music, and plenty of young professionals in energy and climate. There is a bar on board and drinks will be available for purchase (card payment only). More details below...

Arrival Time

Please arrive at 6:15 PM. There is a 15-minute boarding window before the boat departs at 6:30 PM.

Weather

We will be cruising rain or shine! The boat has windows that can be put up if it's rainy or cold. Still, we recommend dressing appropriately for the weather.

Departure

The Henry Longfellow riverboat departs from the Lechmere Canal at the CambridgeSide Mall, directly outside the canal entrance.

Parking

The boat will be departing from the CambridgeSide Mall. For address, please use 100 CambridgeSide Place, Cambridge MA.

Once parked, take the elevator or escalator to the first floor of the mall. Walk through the first floor of the mall, continue past the CVS, and out the doors to the canal. Charles River Boat Company is on the opposite side of the mall from the Cheesecake Factory.

Validated chaser tickets will be provided to guests. With validation, parking will be $4 and will be valid for up to 8 hours. For payment, parking kiosks are located on each floor of the mall before entering the garage. Please pay for parking prior to returning to your vehicle.

Rideshare

The best drop-off location for rideshare and carpool is the main entrance to the CambridgeSide Mall. The address is 100 CambridgeSide Place, Cambridge MA. Enter the Mall through the doors next to the Cheesecake Factory and walk directly through to the other side. The boat is located directly outside of the canal entrance.

Please note that there may be a lot of construction in the area, however the parking garage and pedestrian walkway to our boats will be open.

Wind Technology Testing Center Tour

YPE Boston is organizing a tour of the MassCEC Wind Turbine Testing Center in Charlestown! The WTTC offers the latest wind turbine blade testing and prototype development methodologies to help the wind industry deploy the next generation of offshore and land-based wind turbine technologies. The hour-long tour is limited to 20 people. Fill the sign-up form to lock in your spot! We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Direction to WTTN.

  • Attendees need to have valid photo ID to enter the port area

  • Attendees must wear close-toed shoes

  • Attendees must complete the tour agreement form in advance of the tour.

  • Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided by the WTTC

    Join YPE Boston at Harvard University for a policy panel discussion about electric rates policy in Massachusetts!

    The event will feature experts from state government and utilities and will focus on time-of-use rates, interactions of rates policy with state programs, and the future of electric rates in Massachusetts. There will be brief presentations from each panelist, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.

    Panelists include Meghan McGuinness, Jessica Freedman, and Austin Dawson. Grace Fletcher will serve as the moderator for the event.
